Comment comprendre l’État d’Israël ? Faut-il se plonger dans la Bible? Dans l’histoire de l’Empire russe ? Dans celle de l’antisémitisme européen ? Comment la sécurité est-elle devenue un enjeu fondamental dans un État fondé au sortir du génocide nazi précisément afin d’offrir un refuge aux juifs ? Israël n’en est pas à un paradoxe près. Sa puissance manifeste contraste avec sa légitimité toujours contestée, y compris par d’ardents défenseurs de la tradition juive.
Au-delà des clichés, l’historien Yakov Rabkin nous invite à revisiter les origines et la nature de l’État sioniste. Mettant en relief des aspects de l’histoire juive souvent occultés et oubliés, l’auteur montre comment le sionisme qu’incarne Israël marque une rupture profonde dans la tradition judaïque.
L’auteur dresse le portrait d’un État sans frontières dont les pères fondateurs et les dirigeants se sont toujours gardés de définir le territoire national et dont les forces armées agissent dans toute la région sans se sentir contraintes par le droit international. Un État dont la naissance a provoqué l’exil de centaines de milliers de Palestiniens et qui prétend appartenir aux juifs du monde entier, même à ceux qui n’y habitent pas et ne manifestent aucune envie de s’y installer.
Véritable leçon de critique historique, ce livre est une lecture essentielle pour qui s’intéresse aux relations internationales, au conflit israélo-palestinien, aux rapports entre politique et religion ainsi qu’aux enjeux identitaires.
